Rewriting Journey of the Quill: A Story That Found Its True Voice

Published on 23 February 2025 at 15:51

When I first started writing Journey of the Quill, I was in a place of deep grief. I had just lost my soul sister to suicide, and in the midst of that pain, I needed an escape—somewhere quiet, somewhere safe. So, I wrote a story that reflected what I longed for: peace. No drama, no heartbreak, just a steady and comforting journey.

At the time, that version of Journey of the Quill was exactly what I needed. It gave me something to hold onto when everything else felt unsteady. But as time passed and I found the strength to look at it again, I realized something important: this wasn’t the story I truly wanted to tell.

Roux’s journey was always meant to be more than just a peaceful escape. She was meant to grow, to struggle, to face difficult choices and experience the weight of real emotions. Her story wasn’t about avoiding conflict—it was about navigating it, learning from it, and finding her own path despite the obstacles in her way.

So, I rewrote it. I let Roux face challenges, let her relationships become more complex, and allowed the narrative to take on the depth it had been missing. This version of Journey of the Quill feels honest. It reflects not just the healing I needed at the time, but the reality of self-discovery, of love and uncertainty, of finding your way in a world that doesn’t always give you clear answers.

Rewriting this book wasn’t just about improving the story—it was about honoring the journey I’ve been on, both as a writer and as a person. This version is the one I was always meant to write. And now, I finally feel ready to share it.
